# 750 Tons on a Millimeter-Precise Mission

Cometto SPMTs Master Bridge Push-In in Leipzig.

A bridge replacement is always a major undertaking. On behalf of **Deutsche Bahn** and its contractor **Hentschke Bau**, heavy-haulage logistics specialists **Mammoet** successfully transported a 750-ton, single-piece bridge in Leipzig-Sellerhausen using four 10-axle Cometto SPMT combinations.

From the construction site, the bridge was transported along a route of around 400 metres to its final position. What matters in a manoeuvre like this is precise control, experienced personnel and reliable equipment. The new bridge replaces a structure that had already been demolished and paves the way for two railway tracks—primarily used for freight traffic—to once again cross the road.

### **SPMTs Play a Key Role**

For this operation, Mammoet coupled **four 10-axle Cometto SPMT combinations side-by-side**. The required lifting systems were installed on top to support the bridge’s enormous weight. The convoy slowly rolled across the laid-out steel plates. After around two hours, the bridge was just moments away from being pushed into position. “On a project like this, every step has to be right,” explains Michel Bex, [SPMT](/products/modular-systems/spmt-self-propelled-modular-transporter/) Supervisor and Technical Expert at Mammoet. The **bridge installation** took place during a scheduled railway closure. Rail services on the routes towards Dresden and Chemnitz were suspended for around two weeks. It was therefore crucial that the entire operation was completed according to plan and without delays.

### **Precision for the Bridges of the Future**

“The [electronic steering system](/technology/electronic-steering-system/) provides millimetre-precise control during handling. Each axle can be steered individually,” says Steffen Petzold from Cometto’s Product Management team. “In addition, the system offers 700 millimetres of hydraulic stroke. Combined with the jack-up lifting systems, this allows the bridge to be lifted, transported and then carefully lowered into its final position.”

For **Cometto SPMT** technology, the operation in Leipzig-Sellerhausen is just one more example in a long series of successfully completed bridge projects. And the demand is likely to continue growing: numerous other structures will need to be replaced in the coming years. Following the bridge installation in Leipzig, Deutsche Bahn will complete the railway tracks, overhead line system and signalling equipment. The official inauguration of the new bridge is scheduled for 3 October, German Unity Day.
