# Cometto SPMT in action for Europe’s chip future

Women power on the Cometto SPMT.

Europe’s largest mega-factory for the production of electronic semiconductor superchips is currently being built in Dresden. Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC, together with its shareholders Infineon, Bosch and NXP, is investing around €10 billion in the “Silicon Saxony” site – a key project for the European semiconductor industry.

With enormous manpower and material resources, a factory building measuring around 200 x 200 meters is currently taking shape. In the future, more than 2,000 employees will work there under highly sensitive cleanroom conditions. Before high-tech production can begin, however, the focus is on assembling the gigantic roof structure. The required truss components are supplied by the Austrian company Haslinger Stahlbau. The components are prepared at a pre-assembly area before being transported for final installation – a logistical challenge requiring maximum precision.

### Cometto SPMT as a Precise Heavy Transport Solution

This is where the Cometto SPMT comes into play as the crucial link between the pre-assembly area and the construction site. The modular self-propelled transporters form the backbone of the heavy logistics operations on site, enabling millimeter-precise movements even under extreme loads and in confined spaces.

The company Wiesbauer from Bietigheim-Bissingen relies on a powerful combination of two 6-axle Cometto SPMT units operating side-by-side, powered by a 202 kW power pack. Especially with components of these dimensions, the flexibility of the SPMTs is essential to safely and efficiently navigate the complex routes across the site. The dimensions of the steel structures are impressive: 38 meters long, 8.80 meters wide and weighing around 110 tonnes per girder. To safely accommodate these loads on the self-propelled transporters, a special support frame was additionally integrated onto the vehicle combination.

### Women Power on the SPMT

The entire transport operation follows a tightly scheduled workflow. Week after week, two of these gigantic truss girders must be moved. One of the people responsible for the precise execution is SPMT operator Nancy Koch, who manages the transports with great routine and concentration. “We are extremely pleased,” says Joachim Kolb, Sales Manager at Cometto, “that more and more women are establishing themselves in this traditionally male-dominated field.”

Within just 16 weeks, 32 components have already been successfully loaded, transported and temporarily stored using Cometto SPMTs. And the project continues at full speed: “So Nancy doesn’t get bored, another 136 transports are still ahead,” Joachim Kolb adds with a smile.
