# The Proven Mobile Ballast Wagon Solution

A Union of Power – Cometto MSPE with Liebherr Crawler Crane

Together with Liebherr, Cometto developed a **self-propelled mobile ballast wagon** solution for the LR 12500 heavy-lift crawler crane more than a year ago. Based on Cometto MSPEs, the system provides a flexible and powerful platform for transporting and positioning the **crane’s counterweight system**.

A key advantage is the direct synchronization between the [Cometto SPMTs](/products/modular-systems/spmt-self-propelled-modular-transporter/) and the crane. The ballast wagon is controlled through the crane’s onboard system, allowing the SPMTs and the crane to move in full coordination. This reduces the need for additional operators and enables efficient operation even in confined environments such as ports and densely industrialised areas.

### SPMT as ballast wagon or redeployed

The solution combines high transport capacity with maximum flexibility. With a capacity of up to 60 tons per axle line, the [MSPE](/products/modular-systems/spmt-self-propelled-modular-transporter/)is designed for demanding ballast transport and can also be redeployed for other heavy transport and logistics tasks when it is not required as a ballast wagon. Its modular concept also makes the solution scalable to different crane capacities, allowing the configuration to be adapted with minimal effort to meet the requirements of other crane sizes. Standard features such as the TPMS tyre pressure monitoring system, tubeless tyres and a single powerful powerpack for up to 40 axle lines further support safe and efficient operation.

**Advanced digital technologies** for smooth operation complete the system. [CosmoPRO](/technology/cosmo-cometto-software-for-modular-trailers/), the most advanced transport simulation tool on the market, enables precise planning and simulation of transport operations, while [telematics software supports](/technology/telemakhos-the-remote-diagnostic-system/) remote diagnostics and efficient fleet management. Full metallization provides reliable surface protection even under harsh operating conditions.

**Developed in close cooperation with Liebherr** and proven in daily operation, the solution demonstrates how a mobile ballast wagon can combine seamless crane integration, high transport performance and operational flexibility. At the same time, its modular and scalable concept provides a versatile basis for adapting the solution to different crane capacities with minimal effort.
