Modular Systems MSPE / SPMT

The Cometto MSPE is self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) with electronic steering, a complete system for heavy load transport.

Three interoperable module families combine with diesel, hybrid or electric Power Packs to move heavy project cargo with millimetre precision:

  • MSPE 48T Standard / Heavy Duty version
  • MSPE 60T Standard / Heavy Duty version
  • MSPE EV03 70T Standard / Heavy Duty version

Project cargo and heavy-lift contractors, crane and rigging operators, shipyards, oil & gas and energy companies or other sectors use it wherever loads are too heavy or too large for conventional transport.

Modular Systems - Features

As an experienced manufacturer of self-propelled modular transporters for heavy and special transport, Cometto builds SPMT for project cargo, cranes, shipyards, oil & gas and energy.

MSPE Key Facts

The MSPE comes in three module families, 48T, 60T and EVO3 70T, each in a Standard and a Heavy Duty version, with 3, 4, 5 or 6 axle lines, 2,430 or 3,000 mm wide, up to 70 t per axle line,  ±135° electronic steering, 700 mm suspension stroke and three Power Pack types.

MSPE Module Families

The three families differ in dimensions, payload and bending moment but share their core components, so they are fully interoperable and can run in one convoy:

  • MSPE 48T, Standard and Heavy Duty: robust and versatile for any heavy-duty task, TPMS available on 4, 5 and 6-axle-line modules
  • MSPE 60T, Standard and Heavy Duty: the same robust platform, with TPMS as standard
  • MSPE EVO3 70T, Standard and Heavy Duty: 70 t per axle line, the highest payload on the market, for long distances and steep slopes under full payload

All three are up to 3 meters wide for high stability and come with tubeless tyres, an LED night kit above each suspension and 16 tons lifting rings as standard. Bending moment: 7,250 kN.m Standard, 9,400 kN.m Heavy Duty.

Diesel, Hybrid and Electric Power Packs

Cometto is the only manufacturer offering all three Power Packs: diesel, hybrid and electric. The Power Pack Units come in various sizes, sit separately from the modules and work with every MSPE family. Several Power Packs can be synchronised in one convoy, and side-by-side coupling accessories group several combinations laterally.

Electronic Steering and Remote Control

Electronic steering gives every axle a steering angle of ±135°, with several steering modes for tight spaces. One operator drives the combination by radio remote control, and steering stays synchronised even when different MSPE families run in the same convoy. With the SyncBox interface, MSPE modules can also run together with other manufacturers' self-propelled vehicles SPMT.

Tyres, Rims and Corrosion Protection

The MSPE runs on the only real tubeless tyres in the SPMT market, on aluminium rims, with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System available. For long-lasting surface protection, every vehicle is treated with the MAXProtect+ system.

Convoy Planning with CosmoPRO

The Cometto simulation software CosmoPRO configures the convoy in 3D, calculates bending moments, displacements and shear stresses, and monitors the deformation of the combination in real time.

MSPE Accessories

A complete range of optional accessories adapts the SPMT to the load: loadable and telescopic spacers, a widening system for split modules, bolsters, a load distributor, a tilting device, side-by-side and open compound connection kits, a media bar kit, fully equipped bumpers, an operator platform, cabins, foamed tyres and a Power Pack Unit side support.

Areas of activity

Modular Systems - Applications

Project loads are often too heavy, too large or too sensitive for conventional trailers, and they have to be placed precisely where space is tight. The MSPE is combined to the size and weight of the load, steers every axle and keeps the platform level on uneven ground, so heavy and special loads move safely through sites, yards, ports and plants. It is used for:

  • Project cargo and heavy lift: heavy and special loads, industrial plant components, columns and reactors
  • Crane and rigging support: mobile ballast wagons for crawler cranes, crane components and crane-loaded goods
  • Shipyards: ships and yachts, ship blocks and sections, deckhouses
  • Oil & gas and offshore: topsides, jackets and drilling platforms, pipeline elements, pressure vessels and LNG tanks
  • Energy and transformers: transformers, generators, power station and nuclear plant elements, wind turbine components
  • Heavy steel construction and infrastructure: steel and concrete elements, bridge and tunnel elements

MSPE / SPMT

What is an SPMT, and what is the Cometto MSPE?

An SPMT, or self-propelled modular transporter, is a heavy-load vehicle built from modules that couple together and drive under their own power via a Power Pack Unit. The Cometto MSPE is Cometto's SPMT range: 48T, 60T and EVO3 70T modules with 3 to 6 axle lines, electronic steering and a separate diesel, hybrid or electric Power Pack.

How does an SPMT work?

Each MSPE module carries axle lines with hydraulic suspension and electronically steered wheels. A Power Pack Unit supplies the power, and the operator drives the whole combination by radio remote control. Modules couple lengthways, side-by-side or in open compound, and every axle steers up to ±135° for precise manoeuvring in tight spaces.

How much can the MSPE carry?

The payload depends on the configuration. Each axle line carries up to 48 t, 60 t or, on the EVO3 series, 70 t - the highest value on the market. Modules combine lengthways and side-by-side, so the convoy is sized to the load, from a single module to combinations for the heaviest project cargo up to 25,000 tons ... and beyond.

SPMT or modular trailer: what is the difference?

A modular trailer is towed by a truck and is built for on-road transport. An SPMT such as the MSPE drives under its own power via a Power Pack Unit, steers every axle electronically and positions heavy loads with millimetre precision on sites, in shipyards, ports and plants. Many project cargo jobs use both, the modular trailer on the road and the SPMT on site.

Which Power Packs drive the MSPE?

Cometto is the only manufacturer offering three different Power Pack technologies for its SPMT: diesel, hybrid and electric. The hybrid and electric packs have an integrated on-board charger and high-capacity batteries, and every pack is compatible with all MSPE modules. Several Power Packs can be synchronised in one convoy.

How can I purchase an MSPE, and who services it?

Every MSPE combination is configured to the transport task. Request a quote or contact a sales consultant in your region, and check the new and used SPMT vehicles in stock. At delivery, Cometto experts train your SPMT operators, and Cometto service and spare parts support the fleet, with a 24-hour emergency hotline.
